OUR MISSION
Preservation and protection of the magnificent structures and grounds of the Sands Point Preserve, to promote the Guggenheim Estate as a living museum focused on the preserve's rich history, natural habitats and the architectural features that enhance educational and cultural experiences for all who visit.
For seven years our volunteer organization, Friends of the Sands Point Preserve has fought to give Sands Point and Nassau County residents the opportunity to save this oasis and prevent it from an uncertain future. Now, through the leadership of County Executive Edward P. Mangano and his staff, as of June 23, 2008 Friends of Sands Point Preserve have received the unanimous approval of the Nassau County Legislature to manage, operate, plan for and determine the uses of this waterfront treasure.
The aim of the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve, is to take the current Sands Point Preserve and restore it as closely as possible to the way it was when it was the Guggenheim Estate. By gradually restoring first the grounds and then the buildings of the 216 acre property to the natural look and feel of the Gatsby era and concentrating on programs and exhibits such as in the main exhibit halls of Castlegould, that allow visitors to experience and enjoy that time, the Perserve will become a more important environmental, historical, cultural and natural resource for county residents and should in time come closer to financial self-sufficiency.
