    JANUARY

    Come to the Cabaret…
    Join us as Hempstead House becomes a Supper Club!
    Saturday, January 7
    7:00 pm

    Hempstead House will be transformed into a true supper club with cabaret-style table seating and performances by Broadway stars John Cudia (“Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Misèrables”), Catherine Walker (“Mary Poppins,” “Ragtime”), Judy Blazer (New York City Opera’s “Candide,” “Sweeny Todd”) under the direction of award-winning composer Steven Lutvak. 

    Light supper at 7:00 pm; show time at 7:45 pm, followed by dessert & coffee – with catering by Philip Stone.  Tickets are $100 per person; $190 for two; $360 for four or more and can be purchase in person at the gatehouse or by calling (516) 571-7901.  50% of ticket price is a tax-deductible contribution to the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve.

    Winter Concert at Hempstead House
    Sunday, January 8
    2:30 pm

    Hear the magical harmonies of four extraordinary Port Washington-based choral groups as they join forces at this unique musical concert: 

      • The Community Synagogue
      • United Methodist Church
      • St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
      • Makelah – The Jewish Community Choir

     Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Opossum Tales
    Sunday, January 22 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    12:00 noon to 1:00 pm

    Learn about North America’s only marsupial and meet a live opossum in this interactive, hands-on experience.  Listen to two children’s stories that illustrate the life of the Opossum in the Hempstead House.  Conducted by Wild Life Rescue Center of The Hamptons.  Suggested contribution of $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Groundhog Day
    Sunday, January 29 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    11:00 am to 1:00 pm

    Join us at the Hempstead House and meet a live groundhog! Learn about the history of the annual tradition and create groundhog-themed crafts.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Friday Morning Yoga with Victoria Selbach
    Fridays at 9:00 am

    Finish every week with yoga in the majestic setting of the Sands Point Preserve.  Expand your breath and vibrantly open your hearts while enjoying simple yoga movements that inspire balance, flexibility, and strength.  In winter, the classes are held inside Hempstead House; and in warmer weather, we move to the Great Lawn with expansive views of sky and water.  The classes are “pay-what-you-wish,” after entry fee to the preserve.  

     

    FEBRUARY

    Winter Family Yoga with Victoria Selbach
    Sunday, February 5
    11:00 to 11:45 am

    Celebrate the four seasons through yoga, beginning with this special winter session.  This 45-minute class is perfect for all ages, so bring your little yogini and discover the many benefits of this ancient form of exercise for all of us.  Children will have a blast as they learn to pose in positions named after familiar animals!  Next Family Yoga sessions are scheduled for April 22, July 8 and November 11, 2012.  Suggested contribution is $10 per car.

     

    MARCH

    Birds of Prey
    Sunday, March 11 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    12:00 noon to 1:00 pm

    View fascinating raptors at this exciting demonstration that includes live hawks and owls – and learn important information about the conservation and protection of these species.   Conducted by Wild Life Rescue Center of The Hamptons.  Suggested contribution of $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    APRIL

    April Fools – No Joke!  The Great Egg Hunt
    Sunday, April 1 at Castle Gould
    11:00 am to 1:00 pm

    Get ready to race against the wind and find fabulous eggs hidden throughout the Great Lawn of the Sands Point Preserve.  Special craft projects and refreshments will be available.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Spring Family Yoga with Victoria Selbach
    Sunday, April 22
    11:00 to 11:45 am

    In the Spring Family Yoga session, your whole family can experience the benefits of yoga that include stretching, strength building, and relaxation.  Next Family Yoga sessions are scheduled for July 8 and November 11, 2011.  Suggested contribution is $10 per car.

    2012 Preservers’ Celebration – The Pirates of the Caribbean

    The Friends of the Sands Point Preserve’s Board of Directors cordially invite you to attend our most exciting fundraising event of the year – the theme for 2012 is The Pirates of the Caribbean!    Historic Hempstead House will be transformed into a swarthy, seaworthy vessel – walk the gangplank to enter the festivities – come dressed as a ship’s captain or a rogue scallywag… a lady or a galley wench!  Please call (516) 571-7901 for ticket information.

    Beautiful Butterflies
    Sunday, May 6 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    11:00 am to 1:00 pm
    Have you ever wondered about the life cycle of this fascinating fluttering friend?  Learn about its diet and how plants can attract butterflies to your garden.  Conducted by the Educational Warehouse instructors.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Radical Reptiles
    Sunday, May 20 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    12:00 noon to 1:00 pm

    Learn about the biology of cool scaly creatures – snakes, lizards, and turtles - and common misconceptions about them – in a fascinating live demonstration conducted by Wildlife Rescue of the Hamptons.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    JUNE

    Father’s Day Build-A-Bat House
    Sunday, June 17 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    11:00 am to 1:00 pm

    Bats live all around us – and are highly beneficial neighbors.  A perfect Father’s Day project: construct a bat-house that can be kept in your yard that both birds and bats can use.  Led by biologist and educator Eric Powers.  Please RSVP by June 10 at (516) 571-7901.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    JULY

    Summer Family Yoga with Victoria Selbach
    Sunday, July 8
    11:00 to 11:45 am

    Bring your whole family for the Summer Family Yoga session and enjoy the beautiful view from the outdoor courtyard of Hempstead House.  If weather is not appropriate for outdoor yoga, the class will be conducted inside Hempstead House.  Next Family Yoga class is scheduled for November 11, 2011.  Suggested contribution is $10 per car.

    Amazing Nights of Opera: Puccini’s “The Barber of Seville”
    July 14 at 7 pm & July 15 at 3 pm

    The North Shore Music Festival returns for a second season with an exciting opera duo: “The Barber of Seville” in July and “La Bohème” in August.  The schedule is subject to change, so please check back for updates and ticket information.

    Pond Critters
    Sunday, July 22 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    11:00 am to 12:00 noon

    Dragonfly nymphs, tadpoles, diving beetles – oh, my!  Join “Ranger Eric” as we dip our nets into the preserve’s pond to see what critters we can find.  Plan to get your hands dirty during this fun and exciting adventure as we explore the secret lives of these tiny pond creatures.  Some nets and trays are available on site but bring your own if you wish. We finish close to the beach so you can continue on your own afterwards.  Led by biologist and educator Eric Powers.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    AUGUST

    Secrets of The Forest
    Sunday, August 5 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    11:00 am to 12:00 noon

    Take a break from the heat to join us for a cool walk through a shady forest in search of wildlife.  We'll be searching for clues into bird behavior which will tell us if the summer season is soon to be over – and, more importantly, if fall bird migration has started yet.  Be one of the first to know the secrets of the forest!  Led by biologist and educator Eric Powers. Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

    Amazing Nights of Opera: Rossini’s “La Bohème”
    August 11 at 7 pm & August 12 at 3 pm

    Owl Prowl
    Sunday, August 19 at the Phil Dejana Learning Center
    12:00 noon to 1:00 pm

    Live owls will visit – to help us learn about their fascinating habits, diet, and complex adaptations.  Conducted by Wild Life Rescue Center of The Hamptons.  Suggested contribution is $20 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    SEPTEMBER

    Village Day 2012
    Sunday, September 30

    The annual tradition of fall festivities will bring a farmer’s market, pumpkin painting, face painting, hayrides, a petting zoo, pony rides – and delicious autumn treats for all.  Suggested contribution is $20.00 per car or $15 with annual pass.

     

    OCTOBER

    Haunted Hempstead House for Halloween
    Sunday, October 28

    Families can visit spooky Hempstead House and listen to live organ music on the magical Wurlitzer Opus 442 Theatre Organ – and take the Trick-or-Treat Trails in the Preserve, decorated with coffins, tombstones and more.  Tweens and teens are invited to experience a truly chilling display of haunted rooms on the second floor of Hempstead House, designed by the creators of Blood Manor in Manhattan…  Suggested contribution is $25.00 per car or $20 with annual pass.

     

    NOVEMBER

    Fall Family Yoga with Victoria Selbach
    Sunday, November 11
    11:00 to 11:45 am

    Your whole family is invited to celebrate the fall season in through yoga.  Suggested contribution is $10 per car.
